Terms and conditions

This is a legal agreement between users of this service ("you" or "your") and the Anki author, Damien Elmes ("I", "me", "my"). This agreement governs your use of AnkiWeb ("the service"), be it from a web browser, via the synchronization system built into various Anki clients, or some other way. By using the service you consent to the terms below.

Email

• I may send you email about Anki, the service, or your account.
• I will not share your email address with any third parties.

Deck privacy

• Decks uploaded via the synchronization service remain private to your account. Unless you explicitly share them, the decks will not be made available to anyone else.
• I may analyze the decks to extract anonymous information about popular options and your review history, and may share the anonymous data publicly in the interests of research into spaced repetition. This information may include an anonymous user ID and the times reviews were conducted, but will not include the content of your cards, or any personally-identifying information.
• In the course of investigating issues with the service, I may need to open a copy of one of your decks to reproduce a problem, which may result in inadvertently seeing a few of your cards. If the content of your cards is so confidential that this may be a problem, please refrain from using the service.

Usage of the service

• Decks stored in your account may be archived and eventually deleted if they are not touched in 3 months or longer. If you are not planning to study for a few months, please make a backup of the content on your own computer.
• If you share decks or plugins, you assert that what you are sharing does not contain:
  • Overly offensive or hateful content. The service is a learning platform rather than a platform for political expression, so please keep your deck descriptions clean and provide a warning if you think the deck content may offend anyone.
  • Content which is illegal in the location you are connecting from, or illegal in Japan, Australia, Germany or the U.S.
  • Content that you don't have permission to upload due to copyright.
  • Malicious code
  • Content that doesn't match the description you provided
• Content which violates the above may be deleted without notice, and your account may be terminated.
• If you are a content owner and you discover someone has shared something without permission, please contact me and I will remove it as quickly as possible.
• Actions that negatively impact the service such as scripted downloading of content may result in termination of your account.

Changes

• If I start a company in the future to continue development of the service, I may transfer my rights and obligations to that company.
• If I make any non-trivial updates to this document, you will be required to agree to the new terms the next time you visit the website. If you do not agree to the new terms then you will no longer be able to use the service. If you need access to your online data and don't have an offline copy, I can arrange a one-time download for you.

Money

Use of the service is currently free, and the hosting costs are supported by donations and sales of the iPhone app. As the hosting costs continue to grow, I will probably introduce a "freemium" model in the future, where basic accounts are free, and people can pay for accounts that support larger decks or extra features. The exact nature of the plans and pricing information has not been decided yet.

If a paid plan is introduced in the future and the size of your deck is bigger than the limit on free plans, and you wish not to pay, I will provide a way for you to download your data so that you can continue to use it with the free desktop application. I will never hold your data hostage.

Disclaimer of warranties

Use of the service is at your own risk. While I endeavor to ensure the integrity of your data including off-site backups, ultimately the responsibility is in your hands. Please keep a local backup of your data for safety's sake.

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS”. I HEREBY DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. I MAKE NO WARRANTY THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE ERROR FREE OR THAT ACCESS THERETO WILL BE CONTINUOUS OR UNINTERRUPTED. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT USE OF THE SERVICE IS ENTIRELY AT YOUR DISCRETION AND RISK.
