Japanese Hiragana Mnemonics (version 1.02)
0.09MB. 0 audio & 1 images. Updated 2015-01-13.
Description
Mnemonics for all 41 basic hiragana (including the aspirated g, z, d, b and p rows that differ only two dashes or one circle from respectively the k, s, t and h rows) and all combination-hiragana like しゃ (sha) and ちゃ (cha).
Most of the mnemonics are based on visual resemblances. Only one has a slight sexual connotation, while a few others use slightly morbid resemblances. This was not intentional: these were simply the associations that worked best for me.
Version 1.02 notes:
- For completeness' sake, the aspirated hiragana have been added as well, but only with mnemonics for the irregular ぢ/づ (ji/ju).
- The more obvious combination hiragana (employing the "little" symbols ゃ, ゅ and ょ) have been added as well, but again for completeness' sake, so without mnemonics.
- Larger mnemonics have been added to help memorize the horizontal and vertical order of the kana.
- Some mnemonics that I found less effective than I had hoped, have been replaced with (hopefully) better ones.

| Hint or mnemonic | (Beware: disturbing mnemonic!) A necromancer has tied one end of a rope to a cross-shaped tombstone and the other end around a horse's leg (barely visible bottom right) in order to open a tomb. Continues with れ. |
