This is an Anki deck featuring the Mandarin Chinese names for the first 151 Pokemon, formatted in Simplified Chinese (简体字), using AwesomeTTS for voicing, as well as KaiTi (楷体) font to imply stroke order.
I recommend being around HSK3-4 before using this, so the input becomes comprehensible.
You will get:
- Mandarin Chinese (普通话) pronunciation using AwesomeTTS.
- Simplified Chinese characters (简体字) formatted in KaiTi (楷体) font.
- High-quality Pokemon Yellow sprites.
Let's learn Hanzì using Pokémon names~!
Chinese Pokemon names are fairly interesting to study from.
- Some names are phonetic transcriptions of Japanese names and use otherwise meaningless characters to transcribe them (eg. 波波 Bōbō Pidgey).
- Some will use animal names (eg. Ekans -> 阿柏蛇 Ābóshé, where 蛇 is snake).
- Some will use common surnames (eg. 朗 for masculine characters)
- Some are just outright existing things, eg. 袋兽 dàishòu Kangashan is literally marsupial.
Where relevant characters are used, definitions will be noted, so you can make sentences, etc, using the new characters you learn! This includes coincidental words and characters, giving you something to remember then by. It's very exhaustive.
Caveats:
- Only the newest names are used (eg. 巴大蝴 Bādàhú, Butterfree's older TW/CN name, isn't included)
- Traditional Chinese characters (繁体字) are not included.
- Fan translations from before Pokemon was translated into Chinese (eg. ROM Hacks) are also not used. Some fans still use these, thinking the new ones are inferior, but they're out of the scope of this project.
