Bulk-Generate Japanese OnYomi Phonetics - Making Kanji a Little Easier

0.01MB. Updated 2016-04-14.

Description

What the heck is a phonetic component? Basically, it's a way of knowing the Chinese reading of a Japanese word based on a visually similar radical. 寝坊[ねぼう] and 消防車[しょうぼうしゃ] both have characters with 方 (ほう, ぼう) even though they are different kanji:坊 and 防, they still have the same reading! That's no coincidence. In fact, for all of these characters:方 (ほう, ぼう) → 肪, 坊, 紡, 防, 妨, 房, 謗, 傍, 芳, 訪, 放, they have the same reading when used in their OnYomi. For more info read this article: Read this great article: How to Look Up Kanji You Don't Know by Tofugu. HOW TO USE Make sure to have a Phonetics field that is empty and a Reading field with furigana from the Japanese Support addon on your card already. Run Bulk-add Phonetics from the Edit menu in the Card Browser. This will generate and inject the kanji relative readings into the Phonetics field. Do a search in your deck for Phonetics:_* This will select only cards with phonetics that have been successfully identified. Notice if your Reading field is 時[とき] it will not match the phonetic 寺 (じ) → 侍, 持, 時, 塒, 峙. However if 時間[じかん] is in the Reading, Phonetics will have 寺 (じ) → 侍, 持, 時, 塒, 峙 inside of it. Display this on the answer side of your notes and you will quickly start to pick up the patterns Report issues here: gajewsk2's Github Donations welcome: PAYPAL
