Description

************************* If you have any difficulty updating this add-on then, please follow these Instructions: 1. Navigate to Anki's Tools->Add-ons then disable Migaku Dictionary and restart Anki. 2. Navigate to Anki's Tools->Add-ons and click "Check for Updates", then install the update. 3. After the update finishes re-enable Migaku Dictionary and restart Anki. ************************* Migaku Development Cycles Migaku develops add-ons in 6-month development cycles. For the duration of a development cycle, add-ons are designed for the latest stable version of Anki that was available at the beginning of that cycle. At the end of a development cycle, all Migaku add-ons are upgraded to the latest stable version of Anki. Please note that development of the new updated versions of the add-ons begins at the end of the current cycle, once all Add-ons have been updated the new cycle then begins. Why Migaku uses a Development Cycle: ● By not needing to constantly update add-ons each time a new version of Anki is released, we’re better able to stay focused on new projects. ● When everyone is using the same version of Anki and the same version of the add-ons, bug fixing can proceed more efficiently. ● Because users only have to update their set-up once every 6 months, they can more easily stay focused on their studies. ● We surveyed our users and found that the vast majority approved of a 6-month development cycle. Current Cycle Details: Anki Version: 2.1.35 Download It Here: Windows 64bit - Windows 32bit - macOS 64bit - macOS 32bit - Linux Start Date: Dec 16th, 2020 Development on New Add-on Versions Begins: Sep 16th, 2021 We have major plans that we feel will add the most value to our users and therefore this development cycle will be 9 months instead of 6. During this time we will continue to add new features and deliver bug fixes to add-ons. But we will not support newer version of Anki during this period (unless some major issue is affecting the vast majority of users at the current development cycle version). Version Info - Please Read! The Anki 2.1.14 - 2.1.16 version of the add-on has been left here so that people on older versions of Anki may continue to use it. However we do not offer support for that version of the add-on and it does not offer all of the features, improvements, and fixes in the Anki 2.1.22 version. About the Add-on The Migaku Dictionary is an Anki 2.1 add-on designed to radically streamline the process of using Anki for language learning. It comes with a host of features that help users perform precise look-ups and swiftly craft cards, including global hotkeys for instant look-ups from anywhere on your computer, automatic deconjugation, frequency list integration, single-click definition exporting to cards, mass definition exporting, on-the-fly card creation, and more. ###Mac Users### If you’re using macOS, you must give Anki accessibility permissions in order for the add-on’s global hotkeys to function. This link explains how to do this. ###Linux Users### Unfortunately, Linux is not officially supported and the add-on may not work properly under all environments. That said, please check the GitHub repository below for any community fixes that may be available. Usage Guide Will be updated on GitHub soon. Supported Dictionaries A library of compatible open-source dictionaries and frequency lists can be found here. See the guide linked above for installation instructions and information on supported file formats. Look things up from anywhere on your computer with global hotkeys and automatic deconjugation: Easily reference the frequency of words (represented by the number of stars) and send definitions to cards: Create high-quality sentence and vocab cards in seconds with the Card Exporter: Contribute Click here if you would like to contribute on GitHub. Code for this add-on is open source for the kind person who wants to port it to anki versions above 2.1.35. Taking something that WAS free and making it paid in a world where everything is now a subscription is a great way to alienate your users and fans.
on 1656521714
If you want to use this add-on you need an older anki version. Don't waste your money paying for their subscription services.
on 1656184767
For any newcomers wanting to try this add-on, be aware that the devs have abandoned this add-on in favour of an all-in-one version:
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1846879528

However, it looks like the all-in-one version does not support the full dictionary functionality without getting the browser extension which is under a paid subscription. So if you want the full dictionary add-on experience for free you have to keep your Anki downgraded forever at version 2.1.35 and stick to this one.

As much as I enjoyed this tool, it would be great if there was more transparent communication around this.

Abandoned in favor of third party paid subscription service

Cannot recommend.
Was originally a helpful piece of software, however it no longer works on the current version of anki and the author has decided it will not be updated, it has instead been replaced by an updated addon with a web browser dictionary which also charges a subscription. I don't see why would anyone want this, the best part of this addon was having a dictionary within anki, if we migrating to the browser we may as well just use jisho/kotobank. Hard pass from me and quite disappointed one of the best addons for anki has been gutted.
on 1652096882
Migaku is no longer updating this addon. They have condensed their addons into one universal "Migaku Anki Addon". Unfortunately, this addon, the dictionary, is not part of the Migaku Anki Addon and never will be. Instead, they expect you to buy a subscription to their browser extension, which provides the features of the dictionary addon. In other words, they have killed this addon so they can sell it to you via their browser extension.

"Contact Author" lead to a broken page, so posting this here. Will a user guide be uploaded to github or anywhere soon? Your last comment said it would 2 months ago. For could only find video guides here, but the dictionary ones don't look anything like this add on and don't explain how to add dictionaries, I'm looking to just use the dictionary, not a browser extension: https://www.migaku.io/video-guides

Edit: Found old guides here, https://legacy.migaku.io/tools-guides/migaku-dictionary/manual/

Doesn't work on 2.1.49
Am I supposed to get the older version?
I saw a youtuber trying to sell this very hard but it's not that it is necessary anyway
Comment from author
All the old Add-ons (Including "Migaku Dictionary") have been replaced with a single, all-in-one add-on which works together with the browser extension.

I have a problem with the addon. The contact author page takes too long to load so I want to report it here instead. The google image and forvo functions aren't working. I don't know how to fix that. I'm on version 2.1.35 as it required.
on 1645340910
Both the quick start guide and the user guide lead to a page-not-found. If, from there, you go to the home page, you discover that the only way to get the add-on is via a monthly subscription. If this is a paid add-on it should be made much clearer here.
Comment from author
The addon is free, that's also why it is on Ankiweb. We just recently updated our website, that's why the guides are down. The guides will be uploaded to the GitHub page soon. https://github.com/migaku-official/Migaku-Dictionary-Addon

I really wanted to keep using this, but it's already more than 3 months past when the last dev cycle was. It seems like they might be changing the flow to use a browser extension now, which I could just use Yomichan if I wanted to do that, as I only really need a simple automated way to add definitions to cards.

I'm afraid I'll have to say goodbye to migaku if this doesn't get any more updates, and I think that's the reality right now. :(
Comment from author
The same functionalities as before are still available, while lowering the complexity. With this new version, people don't need to install a ton of addons anymore, only one and they also don't need to install dictionaries in multiple places. The adding of definitions is now just handled from the extension.

So people mentioned here updating meta.json so they can use this on newer versions as well. How do you do that? I already have Anki 2.1.35 and I don't want to downgrade. I looked into the github repository, it doesn't contain the file nor any instructions on how the source code is actually built into an add-on
Comment from author
We really don't recommend doing that as the new version has known breaking changes.

We recommend downgrading to 2.1.35. You will not lose any functionality in doing so. We appreciate your support!

I love the progress so far, but a monolingual dictionary for French and other languages would kill it. There was a comment on 1/1/2020 of how it could be feassible, hope it gets implemented :D

The add-on is amazing, but i'm having a problem with the white mode when using anki in dark mode: https://imgur.com/a/Qq9NUiY
and the add-on's night mode is illegible IMO, so i did some changes in the color of the HTML/CSS file(named: dictionaryInit, line 1271) and the result is this: https://imgur.com/a/UasyYHx when you change to dark mode. (i'm not a programmer but if it can help anyone i'll be glad)

This Addon is amazing, I use it every day and really like it. I was wondering if you could add a button on the front of the dictionary to turn always on top on rather than having to go into the settings every time. It would be nice if there was a button I could just press to turn it off and on.

Also, be wary of voting down the entire add-on because you've had an issue with it, we will reply and support our software regardless of your rating so show good will and vote the add-on up.

Contact Lucas on Twitter, he'd love to look into this issue!
on 1616382865
Recommend this add-on!

Upgraded to 2.1.35. Went smoothly, however there is problems that make me downgrade to 2.1.22.
1. Deconjugation is broken. (This has now being fixed!)
2. Not having the dictionary always on top option enabled, makes searching globally, flash and glitch the dictionary window, and sometimes even resize.
3. The linked selection between the dictionary and the card exporter has being broken/removed. You can nolonger select either the card exporter window and have the dictionary come to the surface of other windows, or vice versa. (This window behavior was in previous versions since the beginning and is suddenly no longer working)

Hope you can address these issues eventually.
Edit 3/22/2021 : problem 1 seems to be fixed(the biggest problem). Problem 2 and 3 persist and are personally still enough of a problem for me to continue using 2.1.22 as they interrupt workflow I've had for over a year.
Comment from author
Message Lucas on Twitter, we'd like to get these issues figured out. No need to recommend an older version as we guarantee the newer version will continue to improve. Also the older version doesn't support integration with the Migaku Browser Extension.

Edit 3/20/2021 : We pushed a fix that will honor the previously installed deconjugation data. Please update. Still want to look at issue number 2 and 3 though, so contact us.

Edit 3/21/2021 : All your reported issues should be fixed, please confirm.

Edit 3/22/2021 : Contact Lucas on Twitter, we would like to see that issue 2 and 3 still occur, as they seem fixed as you described them on our end. What platform are you on?

had to downgrade anki which kinda sucked... (yes i know about the 6 month cycle thing).

also, i just wanted to use it for the forvo/image adding thing but it kept giving me this dumb popup on startup saying that i have zero dictionaries. i tried installing yomichan dictionaries via the method in the guide (unzipping json files into a regular file and then putting them into the dictionary file in the addon as shown in the video), as well as using the dictionary linked on the website but neither of those methods worked, nor got rid of the popup...

i did at least get the image/forvo thing working in the end though so it is faster than going to forvo/using google for every card.

Migaku Development Cycles
Migaku develops add-ons in 6-month development cycles.

Why Migaku uses a Development Cycle:
● By not needing to constantly update add-ons each time a new version of Anki is released, we’re better able to stay focused on new projects.

I think that this add-on could be even more efficent if you added a way to have preset values (i.e. I don't have to change the fields everyday to the same thing when I go to make new cards). Other than that, this a superb add-on.

Very useful addon, significantly speeds up flashcard making.
Nonetheless, is there an option for sending definitions to the target field without the definition header? I would manually tweak the code, but cannot find the location of the commands for this process.
Comment from author
This should be possible if you check off "Duplicate Headers" for the dictionary in question in the main dictionary window (This however is not possible if the header is contained within the definition itself, such as in Japanese monolingual dictionaries). A complete guide is coming in the next few days.

The welcome screen can be disabled using the checkbox at the bottom left of its window. Are you sure your add-on is up to date? Dev is kind of a douchebag:

Regarding promoting YouTube videos within the addon. Yuck.

"The video promotion was a test that we wanted to do and gather data from, and if we decide to do a similar test again we will do so."

Passive aggressive douchebag behavior:

"You really don't seem like a good fit for a user of our software so we would advise an uninstall. Thanks and best wishes!"

We don't pander to haters my friend. Everyone in our community knows how supportive we are as a team and that we care deeply about what we do. We are here to add value, and we are confident that we are doing this. We are also offering our work completely for free, if there are people who expect to receive value from our work completely for free and that to happen with 0 promotion of our other projects then that's unreasonable and we have no qualms stating such. We will promote our brand, just like any other brand does.

Do the following to stop the ads permanently (for the version uploaded on 2020-12-17 at least).

In the Migaku Dictionary addon's directory, edit the following file (make a backup copy first):
__init__.py

Make the line:
from . import main, miUpdater, migakuMessage

Look like:
from . import main, miUpdater

I don't use any other Migaku addons, but likely you have to remove the migakuMessage import from all of the relative __init__.py files to make it work.

Comment from author
First of all, those are goals, not promises. Second of all, ignoring the fact that a major life event happened to the developer that lead to a bit of a delay is extremely unreasonable. Judge the tools based on whether they add value or not, and not based on your expectations of people delivering free work to you.

There is a big difference between this addon and yomichan, If you search something written in hiragana than yomichan will also search using kanji with that reading, this addon however does not. Let's say for example I want to learn the word "ほど".

if you search this in migaku dicationary with JMdict what you get is ほどちかい【ほど近い】 "near, nearby, not far off".
Yomichan with JMdict will give you the accurate definition: ほど【程】"degree, extent, bounds, limit"

Migaku dicationary will also give you the accurate definition if you search "程", but a lot of japanese subs will use hiragana randomly, so in reality you're better of using yomichan to check what the word means, and then copy the kanji from the accurate word to the migaku dictionary search.

Really nice, but Google Images and Forvo (especially forvo) take quick a long time to load and there are times they don't even load. Not sure if it's because I messed up any configuration though. By the way, if anyone is struggling with that annoying pop up when starting anki, just move your taskbar to the left or to the right and you'll able to see the "Don't show me this again" button as you can't resize the window.

Your greed has not only damged the quality of your product but also the reputation in the community
Comment from author
My greed? Wanting an equitable deal is the opposite of greed? My ex business partner literally stole from me...pretty sure that's how the word greed is used? Also, it seems you feel you are entitled to my work. You aren't. It is because of my supporters that these tools exist, and the vast majority of them were happy with my decision to share what I had been going through. I will communicate with my supporters through my platform and will continue to stand up for what I believe is right. If you don't like, or can't at the least respect my perspective and decision, then please feel free to not use my software. Best of luck to you.

Wow thanks! I am glad you like it! The version for the new Anki should be coming in a couple weeks!

I love this add-on! The only addition I'd really like to see is an option to mass-export the dictionary search history to a text file or spreadsheet; I like to memorize the unfamiliar words I find in the definitions, but currently only one term at a time can be copied and pasted from the history so processing a long list can be a bit tedious. Overall, this is a wonderful study tool I'd strongly recommend to anyone learning a language with Anki.

Very useful add-on. This has replaced other dictionary programs for me.
One minor gripe:
It's nice that you can ignore stuff in brackets, but I think you should also be able to ignore spaces (at least in languages like Japanese). Trying to look up '貢[みつ]ぎ 物[もの]' tries to search for '貢ぎ 物' instead of '貢ぎ物' for example. The space throws it off, and it can't find any words.

Ignoring spaces would mess up other languages though, but if you would like to submit this as an idea then please use this form: https://forms.gle/hjQ3Fby6gpC53pNu9

Video and messages about how we should feel bad for you are completely unecessary. If your supporters want to know the details you have Patreon and Youtube. It's a great add-on and you're helping people with your tools, but the unprofessionalism spoils it a bit. This should simply be an extension of your talents to help others, not an opportunity to continue to disparage Matt and pull more people into the drama.

dude needs to grow up. rebrand yourself fine, explain yourself in a video fine. do it in a way that doesn't make yourself look like a petty man child. Be grateful for the exposure your former partner gave you and then go your separate ways.

both versions of the add on are very useful though, just downvoting the manchilds video.

I love your add-on's they are truly amazing and I will continue to support your work. I just want to update my review to say that I don't approve of the way you handled your conflict with Matt. These kind of conflicts should be handled in private and there is no reason to create any unnecessary drama. Blaming and breading your business partner and the old brand is not how you should separate. It seems that the truth is that that partnership wasn't working out for either side. Your differences made working together difficult and as such there is no shame in leaving: it sounds like it will be for the best for both of you. There is no need to trash your partner. I believe that both you and Matt have a lot to bring to the language learning community and I am excited to see all the things that you do now as you continue on a different path.

This is an issue with the dictionary file that you are using, it is malformed json and is not being successfully read. What dictionary are you trying to import? Please tell me the precise dictionary file that causes the issue.

Please note that the Yomichan Kanji dictionary and frequency lists are of a different format and do not work with MIA Dictionary.

This is an amazing add-on. I began to use it to fill some fields, and it works really well, I think it's one of the best add-ons to learn languages. However, I'd like to know if there is any chance to tweak it. In the guide is written the following related to the Definitions headers
" Note: Previously, when part of the definition was highlighted, the Copy button would copy only the highlighted portion to your clipboard, without the definition header. This is reflected in the above picture, which was created before this change in functionality."

Is there any way to change back this functionality? Probably, others find the header in the definition useful, but I don't.

Also, I tried to find a German and French monolingual dictionaries, but I couldn't find them on internet. Is there any chance to get one? has someone found them?

Thanks so much.

Very nice. Works great for me and improves my workflow a lot. I just wonder if there's any way to change the font that is used inside the fields of the Card Exporter window? On my Window install it looks pretty ugly. The font inside the dictionary itself can be customized so that's fine.
on 1592320228
Excellent App, particularly the Forvo lookup.. Prior to this I was going to Forvo, using a Chrome app to snapshot the audio, and then dragging the file to any new cards I had....Very tedious.

One suggestion would be the ability to set the Forvo language to each Dictionary group, rather than at the global level. That way when you select the language group in the drop down, Forvo is pointing to the right language. Not a big deal, but if you study multiple languages (or different dialects of Chinese), would be an improvement.

By the way, the latest update fixed the Google Image search, but seems to have broken the Forvo functionality!
Comment from author
Forvo seems to be working fine, do remember not every word will have audio. Also, the google image functionality and forvo functionality are completely separate modules, a change in one would not affect the other. Glad you like the add-on! Please double check forvo if you can~.
on 1592319917
Excellent addon, loving it. However, is there any way I can display indicators like 'noun', 'i-adjective', 'intransitive verb', 'adverb'... in the Japanese-English dictionary, not just definitions? I also use the English-Portuguese dictionary and indicators like 'noun' and 'adjective' appear normally. Jisho dictionary, as far as I know, uses the same Japanese-English dictionary as mia, but jisho has the indicators I mentioned and I like it.
on 1592120991
This is hands down one of the most useful add-ons ever! I can't live without it now and it has become a key part of my routine. I especially love the integration of frequency lists combined with Forvo + Google Imagines.

Speaking of, as of around a few days ago, it seems the Google Images search is no longer working. It continues to return

```
No Images Found. This is likely due to a connectivity error.
```

I haven't updated any add-ons or Anki recently, I wonder if something has changed in the Google API that is causing this, or if its just me?
Comment from author
Google periodically changes how they deliver their image results which requires me to change the script to handle the new format. There is no google image search api as it was discontinued years back, web results have to be parsed and scraped in order to make the functionality work.
on 1592014598
It's a great add-on, I have started using it alongside the MIA Japanese and Editor add-ons and I have seen my efficiency go up.
HOWEVER, (sorry if the all caps startled you) I am writing this review to point out this one thing from the dictionary that I think could be improved.

Suppose you have your sentence and you look the word up using the hotkeys, it puts the word into forvo, and into google images so it looks it up for you, and then it deconjugates it if necessary and puts it into the built in dicitonary.

The problem is that the order is wrong here. It should deconjugate it before putting it into forvo because forvo doesn't have a deconjugator so it reads the word and doesn't understand it, so I find myself having to go back to deconjugate the word manually so that forvo will show some results. It's just annoying and I think it could probably be easily fixed (maybe not at all, but yeah)

Anyway really appreciate your work Yoga keep it up.
Comment from author
Unfortunately the order is not wrong, because the deconjugation algorithm takes into account every possible dictionary form of a word that a conjugated word could possibly deconjugate to, it is not possible to search all of them on forvo, as on each search the user would be making many requests of forvo at once which would likely cause some of those requests to fail. We have a solution for something like this coming in the future however. Thanks for the kind words!

I’ve tried to install Dictionaries in MIA add-on at latest version of MacOS. I've downloaded the dictionaries from the recommended list, placed them in zip format at the directory as suggested. The dictionary didn't show up when I tried to open Anki again as shown in the video. I get a message that no dictionaries are installed. Ive also tried to delete the add on and repeat the procedure, It doesn’t work. This looks like a great add on, but if I cannot sort this out.It is a great waste. Edit:
The google image search still doesn't work, I don't know why. I change region and it won't wonk in any. The global search does work, It just seems to have an extremely small window for the keys to be pressed together than most other apps, to the point I still can't get it to work 100% every attempt, but I don't even know if that's something you guys have control over, it's not much of an issue though.

on 1583321032
First of all, this is a great add-on, thanks! But I'm having some issues with it and its functionality seems unnecessarily limited...

I want to bulk add definitions to a Japanese word list. For this, the "Export Definitions" feature seemed ideal, so I tried it out with some Anki cards. However, after more than two hours of learning how this add-on works, I discover that its doesn't always do what it says and can't do what it should...

THE BASIC PROBLEM
1) The "Export Definitions" feature doesn't work sometime, even when there selected dictionaries have an entry (杞憂, for example).
2) It stopped working completely for me one time, even for words that it worked for before (採用, for example).

LACK OF FUNCTIONALITY
1) Every time you use "Export Definitions" you have to set all the settings again. These should be sticky or in the case of fields, at the very least it shouldn't default to "empty".
2) Even though MIA comes with its own dictionary information structure, I cannot choose what precise pieces of information I want to add (for example, I would like to add the frequency stars to a specific field where I indicate information such as frequency scores on my own note type). It adds the definitions PLUS the frequency score PLUS the reading PLUS the word brackets. I can see how this might be useful for people only using this to extract single words from sentences. But even then having more control over the information you're adding on your cards would be useful. In theory, it should be easily possible to make "Export Readings", "Export Frequencies", etc. commands.
3) There is no shortcut for this command.

For the task that I wanted to complete, removing all the unnecessary information added and adding all the information MIA Dictionary doesn't give me a definition for, this add-on doesn't really save me time.

Still a great add-on, but it's just not as useful as it should be given how complicated it is.
Comment from author
If you have found a bug please tell me the details on Twitter through dm (https://twitter.com/Yoga_MIA). Seems like you are judging the add-on based on what you want it to be instead of what it is though, which is kind of strange imo. The add-on has been made with the usage case of someone following MIA to study a foreign language in mind, and its features will therefore only extend to what is legitimately useful for those users.

Comment from author
Could you share more detail about your issue if possible?
on 1581668455
I was a bit split as to whether or not to give a positive review as, as others have noted, the add on is full of bugs.
A few noteworthy ones:
With the newest anki version google image support no longer works. This is a real shame as while that was working it was incredibly helpful and was one of the main reasons I had for switching over to this as my main dictionary.
In my experience the send to field button doesn't work as it should. For whatever reason it treats empty fields as not being empty so that when I send something to that field it leaves two spaces at the top which I then have to manually delete. This of course defeats the purpose of the feature as I'd just be better off copying and pasting if I'm going to be doing it manually anyway. I know the problem is with it not seeing the field as empty as when messing around I set it to send "If Empty" and once I ticked that it wouldn't send. I even tried selecting the whole field and deleting everything in it to see if there were some invisible characters lingering in my cards but this wasn't the case. A shame since this is a pretty nice feature.
Those are the main two that I noticed and with them not functioning the add-on loses a lot of its value. That being said just having a dictionary in anki has still ended up being tremendously helpful and has increased the speed at which I make sentences and so I'm leaving a positive review as the add-on has truly done wonders for my language learning even with broken features. If those features worked it would be even more incredible.
One other thing I might mention as a suggestion; at the minute when you highlight a section from a definition and click the copy button (the scissors) it just copies what you highlighted. This seems pretty redundant since its quicker to just crtl + c in this instance anyway. Instead it would be amazing if, when a dictionary definition is highlighted the scissors would copy the dictionary's header for the word as well as the selected text to your clipboard, as the biggest problem I've noticed is that when I want to use a definition that's not the first one I have to manually copy the header and then the definition. This feature would deal with that problem. I don't know how feasible that is but I thought I'd just throw it out there.
Thanks for all the hard work you've put into the language learning community. I know a lot of people don't seem to appreciate it but just know that you've helped a lot of people like myself see their language skills flourish.

Google Images is not only already fixed, but is now, along with Forvo, multi-threaded (which means all text dictionaries load first independently). We are testing that patch on the MIA Server right now and it should be out publicly soon. Thanks for notifying me about the issue with the scissors button and the sending to field feature! Both features actually originally did work like that, I instantly realize now that I broke the scissors in particular when making changes last time, both features will be fixed soon. Thanks a lot for writing a very helpful review that clearly specifies issues you've encountered.

I'm sorry to tell you that Ubuntu 18.04 LTS doesn't work either.

Linux is not officially supported, so a down-vote doesn't really make sense here.

Also, please use Anki 2.1.16 if you would like to use our add-ons for now. Anki has added a new sub-branching feature after recognizing that changes made in Anki 2.1.18 broke many many add-ons not just ours. So for right now, our MIA add-ons only support Anki 2.1.14 - 2.1.16. We plan on adding support for the 2.1.18+ in the near future as time allows.

Unfortunately not able to get this working on my Mac - real shame because the features look great and the integration with Morphman is dreamy. Crashes Anki on opening, difficult to even get Anki open but once it loads, error message pops up as shown below and dictionary add-on does not work at all.
Running Mojave 10.14.2, Anki 2.1.19

Have tried installing previous versions of Anki 2.1.15 and 2.1.16, and while this fixes the issue with this dictionary add-on, it throws up errors from Morphman.
I don't know that much about programming but it seems the issue lies with the Objective C plugin for Python that is being used having encoding issues - was not able to fix this myself.

FOR NON-WINDOWS USERS: You might have problems if your Anki is in the latest release (2.1.19 as of now). The add-on works fine if you are on an older version, I recommend 2.1.16 since it's the most up to date version that also works. You can download it from Anki's site (https://apps.ankiweb.net/downloads/archive/). Also run this command "sudo apt-get install python3-pyqt5.qtsvg" to update python. I'm on Pop_OS! but this issue might happen with other distros and maybe even mac.

My (now outdated) complete post:

Great add-on but it doesn't work on Manjaro and on Pop_OS!, running the latest version of everything. This shows up when I open Anki (I'm replacing my name with "USER"):

Edit: Sorry!!! I didn't know Linux was not supported, really doesn't make sense to downvote it then. Serves as a warning for anyone planning to do the same though, so I'll keep it here. The add-on is incredible but you might have to search for workarounds.

Linux is not officially supported, so a down-vote doesn't really make sense here. On GitHub there were several users talking about getting it to work on Linux so you may want to reference there.

on 1578805672
Very useful add-on, especially when paired with the other MIA add-ons. Only thing I wish is that the night mode for the dictionary more closely resembles the actual "Night Mode" add-on as to have continuity between the flashcards and the dictionary.
on 1578664949
Fantastic. Easy to install and saves a lot of time. High quality like every MIA product.
on 1578517370
Night mode's contrast is too high (literally white on black), and I would like to request monolingual dictionaries for the other languages as well, since I study French.

Has sped up my card creation a lot. Really helpful. Extra points for the frequency stars, makes it easier to evaluate whether a word should be learned yet. Easy to use too, once you get the hang of it.

Excellent add-on for language learning users espacially for Japanese. It needs a little commitment to understand how it works and to import your dictionnaries, but then the process of creating new cards becomes very smooth.

Been using it for almost a week now. Saves so much time when making cards, especially when used with Morphman -- Morphman tells you which cards are ideal for you to learn, then you just mass generate all the definitions for those words.

Great add-on, though I would love to have monolingual dictionaries for all these languages (German-German, French-French, Italian-Italian). Technically, this data could be mined from Wiktionary (free & open source) for most major languages, but it would involve downloading each language's individual Wiktionary database, opening in MySQL, and converting it to MIA's proprietary dictionary format. All of this is explained on Wiktionary's website (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Help:FAQ#Downloading_Wiktionary), but is unfortunately way over my head in terms of technical know-how. This add-on has the potential to save tons of time, and Japanese learners can benefit from it immediately. But the lack of monolingual dictionaries in other languages is unfortunately a deal breaker for me right now (I'm currently learning German). So I won't be switching over just yet, but I will keep an eye on future updates/releases. Great app, boys. I believe this add-on has the potential to be a game-changer. Hope to see more support for other languages in the future.
Comment from author
Thanks for the feedback. We have tons planned for this add-on still, so I very much doubt you'll be disappointed. .
on 1577896381
Not sure why some people are complaining about them promoting their project when this add-on is part of their project. The criticisms related to monetization don't make sense given that MIA is free and the Patreon is there if you want to support the creators (as is the case with lots of projects). Of course the add-on isn't necessary, just as it's technically not necessary to use Anki to learn words, but it's useful and saves time (esp. mass generation). I think the fair reader would agree that Matt and Yoga have done great work here in streamlining part of the card creation process.
on 1577790263
clunky UI, and Nazeka for Firefox kind of makes it redundant.
on 1577683338
Very helpful! Even as a standalone dictionary, it is very helpful as it is compatible with yomichan format, I would actually to have a similar dictionary on my phone, where I could import the files myself. The Anki integration then makes it very efficient at quickly creating cards, as I had to switch between many different tabs to check the definitions on my browser before.

..way to prove the guy who left the negative review right. notice how he was immediately name-called by one of the followers (the same ones the author uses to spam the page with misleading positive reviews) for stepping out of line?

that and the defensive reply by the author to defend shameless advertising/monetization where it does not belong is going to have me take a hard pass on this one.
on 1577582375
lmao at the hater/troll comment below. Awesome work!
on 1577578008
Notice how, of all the people making great add-ons, they're the only ones pushing social media and trying to get you to pay them? The author will reply defensively, but it's true. There are also a few other issues:

1) I can already make monolingual J-J cards in about ~10-15 seconds. This is add-on is ultimately solving a problem that doesn't exist, is past the threshold of diminishing returns, and enters the territory of continuously working on the "perfect setup" by constantly tweaking around with tools rather than actually learning Japanese. He created this add-on to justify the existence of his Patreon, not because it was actually necessary.

2) He uses said Patreon to implicitly encourage his followers to spam his add-ons with positive reviews even if they have issues.

3) The UI is pretty bad, and the add-on title and favicon are branded with their obnoxious method (which ironically is just a cash grab modification of the pre-monetized AJATT that he used to recommend before he was financially motivated), as if they constantly have to advertise it for some reason. Creating cards for language learning is a universal thing that has nothing to do with any method.
Comment from author
Sorry to hear you didn't find value in the add-on. Myself and many others personally have found a lot of value in its use and continue to find it pretty much revolutionizes our language learning work-flow! To say what it does was easily doable before is just inaccurate and the overwhelming majority of users will disagree with you, and with good reason. To touch on your concern about how we promote our work. First of all it's inaccurate that other add-on creators do not promote their social media and Patreon accounts, simply look through the add-ons available for Anki and you will find quite a lot of creators do the same thing. Second of all, you seem to be under the impression that us allowing willing supporters to contribute to MIA is somehow arbitrarily wrong. Remember that is only your personal opinion and that many interesting projects on the internet are now run this way. There's nothing inherently wrong in anything we are doing, you are simply having an emotional reaction to it due to your own personal background. Now when it comes to branding, there is nothing wrong with us branding our projects as our projects. We are working hard on MIA and want it to spread and help as many people as possible escape from ineffective methods, and we will always unashamedly admit that. As far as your concerns about AJATT and MIA go, while it is true that Matt previously promoted AJATT, I was never an AJATT supporter and only supported immersion based learning from the start. MIA is a collaborative effort between us that was spawned because of our shared passion for immersion based learning, it has had a wide range of influences just as AJATT or any other language learning methods have. Lastly, if you're truly interested in immersion based learning too, then it would seem like we would be on the same side. It seems silly that you so whole-heartedly oppose people trying to promote methods that will actually lead others to success in language learning, while at the same time there are tons of companies out there selling ridiculously priced courses that are fundamentally ineffective to uninformed consumers, both ripping them off and at the same time under-paying their employees. Anyways, I doubt this reply will somehow put you at ease and allow you to end your personal vendetta against us and MIA, but I do hope that at least it will serve as a bit of entertainment for all who read it going forward. Cheers bud.

I absolutely love this add-on. I feel so much more productive in being able to look things up within Anki, and while immersing in the browser.

For users of Japanese, look up the matt vs japan video, "How to Get 10+ Dictionaries for Yomichan" for additional monolingual and pitch accent dictionaries.

For those using the macOS version: to get the global search hotkey working, you have to go to System Prefs > Security > Accessibility and grant Anki permissions. This is missing from the docs and took me a while to find out.
on 1577435641

This plugin might replace most of my qolibri use. After converting the EPQINGs to Yomichan, it was very easy to get them imported into this plugin. I have found 2 things I hope will be changed. First, the UGLY, hard to read yellow used for the searched term, though the coloring can be disabled in the settings. Please allow this to be changed =). The other is right click closes the tabs. In a web browser and many other programs, middle click closes the tabs.

This addon is so good that has the potential to greatly improve all language learning anki decks...
truly game changing, I will be improving all my decks!!!
on 1577392106
Holy crap. This is a game-changer. It used to take me like an hour to make all 20 cards for the day, now I can get it done in like 20 minutes. Allowing for almost 40 extra minutes of study/immersion per day. This is an INVALUABLE tool for anybody that is learning a language the correct way, which is some form of immersion method. Thank you so much MIA, I don't think I would ever get to the point of fluency in Japanese without you guys. But now, I'm very confident I'll exceed my expectations within the next few years thanks to tools like these.

Amazing tool even for those learning other languages that aren't Asian - Portuguese in my case. Only downside (not the addons fault) is with European languages not being able to deconjugate. This can worked around if you know basic conjugation rules & searching forward.
on 1577354866
Makes card creation while immersing so much faster and intuitive. Now I pretty much keep Anki open at all times just so I can use the card creation features. An essential element to the MIA pipeline no matter what language you're learning.

For those learning Japanese: if you have the MIA Japanese Support add-on installed and set up, this add-on will automatically add furigana to every sentence/definition/Japanese text included on your card.
