Description

     Adds a heatmap graph to Anki's main window which visualizes past and future card review activity, similar to the contribution view on GitHub. Information on the current streak is displayed alongside the heatmap. Clicking on an item shows the cards reviewed or due on that day. ----- IMPORTANT: You can now install Review Heatmap by simply copying the add-on code below into Anki (under Tools → Add-ons → Get Add-ons). You no longer need to download anything manually! ----- CHANGELOG IMPORTANT: While likely compatible with earlier versions, add-on versions v1.0.0 and up have only been extensively tested with Anki 2.1.49+. The AnkiWeb upload is therefore limited to Anki 2.1.49+ for the time being (but might be expanded to earlier releases in the future). If you are on an earlier Anki release there is no need to worry: Copying the AnkiWeb add-on code into the app will automatically download a compatible version of the add-on for you. Hi there, sorry to hear that you're having trouble getting Review Heatmap to work! Unfortunately I can't seem to reproduce the issue over here – Review Heatmap seems to be working fine for me both on Anki 2.1.63 and earlier releases.

Hi there, sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the add-on! Anki currently has some problems handling DST changes and timezone switches, which can cause visual gaps to appear in the heatmap in some edge cases, but usually this doesn't affect the streak calculation. Whatever the issue is, I'm sure it's fixable :)

It's a very neat add-on. It does what it's supposed to, and the appearance of the widget is quite nice. The streak count and heatmap serves as a nice extra boost in motivation; it makes it so that you can really see the momentum you've got going when you start to fill up the heatmap, and the streak count makes Anki almost addictive. It is an awesome add on! great job guys! But I seem to be facing an issue. The settings I use always revert back to continuous timeline from yearly on its own on the next restart. Also the same keeps happening with fine tuning settings, the date before ignoring cards keeps changing back to the original i.e. to someday in 2019.

I love this addon, but would like to make a suggestion!! I would like to suggest a "Minimum cards to register": an option to make you lose your streak, ignore any cards reviewed, or at last to not show on the graph, if you don't review a minimum of X cards on that day. It would be nice to force you to do a certain amount when you are thinking about doing an insignificant number just to avoid losing your streak.

Hi there, thanks for the feedback! A toggle to switch between the current behavior and no color inversion is planned for Review Heatmap's next major feature update. It will require some under-the-hood work first to change how RH's theming system works, as color inversion is currently hard-coded, which is why this has to land in a major update rather than a smaller hotfix. Thankfully v1.0.0 laid down a lot of the refactoring groundwork, e.g. completely overhauling how RH's web components are built and inserted into Anki, which is why this is now reasonable to finally tackle.

The other consideration here is that a lot of users have gotten used to the inverted colors over the past five years and actually prefer them, which is why any implementation will have to be customizable. That way people who prefer the current color schemes can keep it that way, and users who'd prefer no color inversion can disable it. In any case, rest assured that this is on its way. It just has to be done right, which – with v1.0.0 now out – is actually feasible.

If you have any further questions or suggestions regarding night mode, please feel free to shoot me an email at ankiglutanimate@gmail.com. I might even be able to send you a no-color-inversion test release, as I'm moving towards trialing the light themes in night mode :)

(1771074083) You will also have to restart Anki after downloading the add-on for the changes to apply. It should work on Qt6 builds of Anki after the latest updates, but one thing that might be happening here is that you still have an older version of the add-on installed that hasn't gotten an automated update yet. So my recommendation would be to try to delete the add-on (by heading to Tools → Add-ons from Anki's home screen), and then reinstalling it from AnkiWeb (code: 1771074083).

I can't see the heatpmap after completing a deck

Hi there! Due to some important changes in Anki, the add-on stopped working on the deck completion screen a few Anki versions ago. Making it work with it again is on my TODO list, but since this will need a lot of under-the-hood work, it can't land in a small bugfix release. My plan is to reintroduce support for the deck completion screen in the next significant update to the add-on (v1.1.0), which should hopefully not be too far off. Hope that helps for now and clarifies things!

Just as a first thought: Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the add-on? (by heading to Tools → Add-ons, and then reinstalling with the code 1771074083). It might seem silly, but oftentimes that's enough to fix things as you might still be stuck on an older/different version.

A few weeks ago I noticed the add-on doesn't appear anymore in deck's page when you complete it, I don't know if it's a bug or it is supposed to be that way, I would appreciate if you could add an option to add the graphical information even after you have no more cards of that deck to answer that day, since I use it to help me reordering some cards. (maybe it is a too small problem to a big fix, if that's the case just forgive me and ignore me haha)

Hello. I just downloaded the latest version of Anki (2.1.54) and the heatmap doesn't appear to be rendering properly. I think this version of Anki just came out today and maybe the author hasn't had the time to fix the bugs but I just thought I'd let them know. When this issue is fixed I will happily change my review.

EDIT: This is actually not a problem with the add-on, but one in Anki itself. The add-on works beautifully beyond that and I'd highly recommend it.

I am getting an error when I load Anki. It does not occur when I disable the review heatmap. It seemingly started happening out of nowhere (I have used review heatmap for some time).

Unforeseen things happen sometimes and ETAs can be difficult to set, but I do understand your frustration. I hate vague ETAs myself as a user. Still, at the risk of adding another quote to the list above: Rest assured that the update is very close to release.

If you don't want to wait, then temporarily switching to the Qt5 variant of Anki 2.1.51 could be an option. There might be reasons why you have to use Qt6 (e.g. on some recent Linux systems), but for the most part the Qt5 variant should provide the same experience. In fact, both variants currently have advantages and disadvantages beyond add-on compatibility and you can switch between them seamlessly (even on Apple Silicon): https://docs.ankiweb.net/platform/mac/installing.html#qt5-vs-qt6

Good way to see how much I have revised... I wish there was a heatmap type of thing where you can see how many cards you’ve memorised. I think it would give a boost of trying to get done quicker, or a way to see how much you’ve revised. I like the heatmap, I hate the streak system. Why is there an option to hide the heatmap but NOT the streak? You can hide both at the same time, or just the heatmap, but not just the streak. I know some people for whatever reason like the weird pressure of keeping a streak going, but to me it seems almost addictive and I'm not trying to learn Japanese because I want to keep a number going up.

But it's a real mission to install not really fully the dev's fault.

I run linux mint, likely this has been addressed on github, if not plz ask for me to log. But this info is for ppl here who do not use github at all and just install and use the app and plugin.

- I log into my ankiweb account, there's just access to decks, no links to addons, forums or any hidden part of ankiweb, just decks and account details.
- I have to search on google to find the addon page https://ankiweb.net/shared/addons/2.1, review heatmap isn't there, just the stolen version which would be wrong to download but i can see why it was put up there, because the official one just isn't there.
-So I have to manually search google again and find specifically, https://ankiweb.net/shared/review/1771074083, downloads ok.
-but double clicking on it does nothing in linux, it just opens as an archive file. drag drop into anki does nothing either.
-so you just have to manually open the addons folder of where you install and extract the archive into there with some name with no spaces like "review_heatmap" and restart anki and it works fine.

Feedback - I have used this add-on for over a year now and it works great. I'd like to see some kind of toggle feature where you could specify the values for the shades of colour as doing 400-500+ cards daily looks pretty similar on the heatmap. Hot tip for the author: you can prevent 99% of downvotes by making the installation crystal clear. I'd recommend the very first thing the user see when landing on the main Anki add-on page is a GIF or video with you showing how to install.

I'm not a developer but consider myself more technical than most people and it took 10 minutes to read through all the details to figure out how to install from GitHub. I only finally figured it out by seeing your reply in the comments section, which was helpful.

Because the current version for 2.1 is beta-quality software that should not have seen a wide release. Uploading an add-on to AnkiWeb takes one second, so if I haven't done it yet, you need to understand that there are some good reasons behind that decision. I would highly recommend users to stay away from that page you linked to for a number of reasons (outside of it being an illegitimate upload): 1.) I have no control over what's been uploaded there. The add-on could have very well been tampered with and you'd be none the wiser. 2.) Using that upload will make it much more difficult for you to upgrade once a new beta build or the final stable build is out (which should be over the next 2 months).

Installing the beta from the GitHub page is not difficult. You just click on the latest version on here: https://github.com/glutanimate/review-heatmap/releases (e.g. Version 0.7.0-beta.1 as of writing this reply). Then you head to the bottom of the page and download the .ankiaddon file under Assets (e.g. review-heatmap-v0.7.0-beta.1-anki21.ankiaddon). Fantastic add-on. A couple suggestions:

Behavior of this heatmap could use a little tweaking, IMO. For example, when it's shown in Statistics, it chops off "longest streak" and "current streak" stats at 31 days if the radio button at the bottom is set to 1 month. It will also chop off the heat map history at the same point. This behavior doesn't make a lot of sense to me for a big-picture-overview type of map addon. We should really be seeing the full history (or at least the amount set in the heat map prefs dialog).

In addition, the way it deals with year boundaries (esp relevant right now) seems suboptimal -- you really lose the big picture right at the beginning of the new year. I don't want to see a blank heatmap of 2019, especially where Anki's normal forecasting is pretty limited. Maybe a better default behavior would be to try to split the year between previous year and current year near the 6-month marker, or even let the user set the number of days/months of look-ahead so that the past reviews are shown in more detail. If set to "months", you can page back and page forward to get a view of past reviews +1-2 months (but this has to be redone every time the heatmap is re-rendered). IMO this behavior should be default with the months setting, and maybe default for the year setting as well.

I like this add-on for its concise yet useful visualisation of one's review progress. It gives a nice breakdown by days, weeks, and (optionally) months. I like its forecast function too. Thanks for the great add-on and its high quality.

??In the last update it is described that a customization option was created in the tools menu. But the add-on is not appearing on the Tools menu. So I do not have access to your customization options. The add-on only appears under "Add-ons." (System microsoft windows XP)

Tools like these are great because they not only provide information but also encourage one to do even more – in particular, not to miss a single day. It's super stimulating!

But I agree with the previous comment of high daily review counts just becomes a wall of blacks. I review on avg about 200 cards per day.

Nevertheless it is very interesting see the heatmap when I scroll back to a few years ago when I just first started anki (doing 50-100 cards/day).

Consider changing color scale

For decks with large numbers of reviews (my daily reviews tend to average somewhere between 200 to 500 cards), the heatmap just looks black, despite there being up to 300 review differences between different days:

Makes it not overly interesting if I can only differentiate visually between days where I happened to only do none, a few dozen, or my normal days.

Consider adding more shades of green to allow for more groups and to change the batch sizes instead of being in groups of 20, to a sliding scale where the batches grow as you go up in number. For example, a scale more like [0, 1-25, 25-60, 60-100, 100-175, 175-300, 300-500, 500+] would probably make the graph interesting both for people with small number of reviews a day (4 color categories below 100) and for people like me with a large number of reviews.
