What is this deck? This is a study-deck specifically created for Chinese learners who want to read 活着 (To Live) by 余华 (YU Hua) as soon as possible. Studying this deck will allow you to read as extensively as possible and not having to look up 20 new words per page. The deck contains the 450 most frequent unknown words, assuming you already know all of the HSK 5 vocabulary. The cards are ordered by the first occurrence in the text. That means you can already start reading before finishing the deck, as words at the back of the list will first appear later in the novel. However, I suggest you to get a head start of 5-7 days of studying before starting to read. After studying the whole deck you will know roughly 85% of all words used in the novel, compared to 65% if you only know the HSK 5 vocabulary How this deck is set up? The deck contains 3 explanation cards (one character overview, one general overview + one plot synopsis without spoilers) and 450 vocabulary cards. Each card contains the following fields that are already filled in: {Hanzi} - the unknown word {Pinyin} - Pinyin with tone-marks {English} - auto generated definition, might be buggy! {HSK Level} - shows the HSK level of the card, if it contains a * if means that the word is outside of the HSK {Ruby} - please don't play with this field if you dont know how to operate the "Chinese Support Redux" Add-on! {First Occurence} - the spot in which a word appears for the first time within the novel. A low number means early, the higher the number the later it appears. {Audio} - intentionally left blank, so you can add audio if you want to {Frequency} - How often does this character appear within the novel The aim of this deck is to help you read with more ease as soon as possible, so cards are naturally only one-way: unknown word -> meaning & pronunciation As the vocabulary list is auto-generated using a parsing software, there might be some really basic or weird words included in the non-HSK category (like 她们), just go ahead and delete those if you find them. How to best study this deck? If you study 10 new words per day, you can finish the deck in 45 days. If you do 15 new cards daily, you are finished after only a month! I suggest you to get a head start of 5-7 days of studying before starting to read, just to be on the safe side that you are not out-pacing your studying progress while reading. As the vocabulay list is auto-generated using a parsing software, you will probably delete a whole bunch of already known (non-HSK) words, so in the end it will be definitely less than 450 words. And don't forget to use the hashtags #ReadingHuozheChallenge and/or #ChurchofAnki if you post about it on Instagram! :) This is too easy/too advanced for my level. Good news, this project is trying to be inclusive for learners of all levels past the beginner stage, so this deck is part of a four deck series! There are four decks catering to learners' needs depending on your personal HSK level. The first deck assumes you already know everything up to and including HSK 3 (活着挑战 after HSK 3 - Huozhe Challenge), the second one is for everyone who has HSK 4 under their belt (活着挑战 after HSK 4 - Huozhe Challenge), the third one is from a base of knowing all HSK 5 words (活着挑战 after HSK 5 - Huozhe Challenge) and finally the fourth one is from the base of after HSK 6 (活着挑战 after HSK 6 - Huozhe Challenge). The Challenge The official starting date for reading is 01.12.2021. The goal is to finish the novel by the end of December 2021. Just to put it into perspective, the printed novel has 195 pages (not counting the foreword), which means you want to read between 6-7 pages daily on average. The Challenge is hosted on Instagram by https://www.instagram.com/lang.dreams/ and uses the hashtag #ReadingHuozheChallenge. If you have any questions regarding the plot or something is unclear, please liberally use the hashtag to ask those questions. Challenge Timeline: Week one: 05.12 - How did studying the Anki list go so far? How enjoyable is reading the novel at your current level? Which Chinese language books or readers have you read before? Week two: 12.12 - Do you have any questions regarding the plot, historical events or some cultural words? Week three: 19.12 - Movie time! Watch the movie on Youtube (https://youtu.be/-s3u8bPZfLU) and tell us how your opinion on it. How does if differ from the novel? Did some aspects surprise you? Week four & five: 31.12 - Final thoughts: Was it tough to read To Live in Chinese? Will you continue reading native material in 2022? Final remarks - The Challenge is hosted on https://www.instagram.com/lang.dreams/ - The official hashtag is #ReadingHuozheChallenge. And you're invited to also use #ChurchofAnki for any Anki-related posts. - Do NOT read the Wikipedia page as it contains major spoilers. - The movie version of the novel has been uploaded with English subtitles. It's a brilliant piece of Chinese cinema, but be aware that the storyline was altered for the big screen.
