japanese phonetic - signal primitives - ONYOMI groups

0.04MB. 0 audio & 0 images. Updated 2013-10-31.

Description

List of japanese primitives that contain phonetic clues about the ON reading (chinese pronounciation, for compound words) of kanji groups of 2-30 characters. To gather it, I made use of several sources from many books and studies, included Heisig's RTK2, Hiroko Townsend, and computer generated lists of readings such as the ones found on http://forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?id=11565 and http://namakajiri.net/nikki/testing-the-power-of-phonetic-components-in-japanese-kanji/. I also manually anotated some groups by looking for a pattern in groups of kanji that shared ON readings. Due to the extremely irregular nature of Japanese ON readings, several exceptions and remarks have been included to make the readings a bit more regular. The +330 primitives included here should be enough to figure the reading of +1200 touyou kanji, and +1750 nontouyou. To aid in the study, there's a "mnemonic" field in which you can write a mnemonic story to help you remember the ON reading. If there's one, it will appear in the card review if you click on the "hint" button. NOTE: Some signal primitives are only available on extended unicode and/or chinese. If you lack the fonts these will look as either a dot or a white box. In those cases, they're accompanied by a sample kanji. You can search the missing characters in http://glyphwiki.org/ and paste the pictures into your local ANKI deck. Updated Oct, 06, 2013: - Fixed some mistakes and added a few more exceptions. - Added many more signal primitives and removed a few of the less useful ones (mostly when the ON readings in common are rare readings). - Added a few Touyou kanji that have a close resemblance to some signal primitives that share the same ON reading. Updated Sep, 30, 2013: - Removed spurious and rare readings (mostly due to artifacts in the algorithm and mistakes in kanji dictionaries). - Added some groups that were revealed after removal of those artifacts.
