Double-check the definitions

Posted on 2013-03-17
It's a good collection of words, but some of the definitions are off. "Abysmal" doesn't just mean "sub par," it means "very bad." "Abrupt" is defined (IIRC) as "ending suddenly." It actually just means "sudden" -- an ending could be abrupt, but something could start abruptly, too, or someone might cut you off abruptly if you are in the middle of telling them something that isn't correct, such as that the word "abysmal" means "sub par."
I'm actually inclined to keep the deck because I like the level of the words I have seen. They are words that every educated English-speaker should know, but any given educated English speaker will probably find some of them to be new. But if you see a definition and you aren't already sure that it's correct, double-check with a dictionary.
