A deck consisting of Chinese words you're likely to find on menus in Hong Kong. The goal of this deck is to teach you to read the Chinese characters that frequently appear on menus. While no such deck could possibly be contain every single word you will find on a menu, I think that if you learn the following characters you should understand the basic contents of what you're ordering as well as the preparation methods.
At this point there is only one card type in this deck: recognition. You will be presented with one or more Chinese characters at which point you should attempt to identify them and say them in Cantonese if you like.
Explanation of Fields:
- Character - The Chinese character(s) you might see on a menu
- Literal English - A literal, word by word translation of the meaning of the Chinese characters. In the case of transliterations, where the meaning is secondary I add [transliteration].
- Jyut Ping - How to write (and speak) the word in Jyutping.
- Audio - At this time I don't not have any of these words recorded. If you're
interested in recording some words, please let me know.
- Cantodict - A link to the definition of the food item at Cantodict. In
the (rare) cases where the food item does not have a dictionary entry I link to the most important character or character group that I was able to find an entry for.
- Radical - The radical for (one of) the character(s). Typically also includes
the other ways you might see a radical written within a character. As you try to learn more characters you may find radicals very useful in helping you to remember the meanings of specific characters. If not, pay no attention to this field.
- Radical Meaning - Radical defintion. Usually taken from the listings at Yellowbridge.
- Yellowbridge - A link to the radical at Yellowbridge.
Note that most of the secondary fields (such as links) should be coded to only appear on the cards when present, since they are not present in every note.
Please rate the deck (through Anki) and comment to let me know if it was useful or how it might be improved.
Please post discussion and comments to the
thread I created for this deck at CantoDict forums. If you're not already a member, please sign up. It is the best resource on the web for learning Cantonese. You should have a membership there. But, failing that, you can email my at my gmail account: chris[dot]lonsberry.
After the file is downloaded, double-click on it to open it in the desktop
program.
At this time, it is not possible to add shared decks directly to your
AnkiWeb account - they need to be added from the desktop then synchronized
to AnkiWeb.
