Joseph's N3 Vocabulary Deck with Japanese Definitions

0.81MB. 3 audio & 0 images. Updated 2015-12-16.

This is an all-Japanese deck containing all the N3 vocabulary words (and more) with their corresponding definitions in the first edition of the 大辞泉. If no definitions are found using 大辞泉, I used 小学館, or ultimately, 広辞苑. I originally intended to make a deck using 広辞苑, but its definitions tend to be hard to understand, so I used 大辞泉 instead, whose definitions and sample sentences tend to be more modern. In the case where there are many definitions under a single entry, the first definition is most commonly used in modern Japanese. I used only two fonts: Meiryo and EPSON 教科書体M. As for the background, I used a traditional Japanese color called 一斤染. It took me three days to make this deck because I tried to make it as perfect as possible, but I still haven't tried it myself so I can't assure you of anything. When you spot a mistake, please contact me using this e-mail: kangjuese@yahoo.com.

It take a while to study this, but it really helped me improve my understanding of japanese. Thanks !

These are essentially exhaustive entries from a dictionary. Yet when one studies Japanese at level N3, 2 screens worth of definitions is off the mark: a few well-chosen sentences would be more useful.
The etymology would also be quite useful: giving one by one the meanings of the kanji composing the word.

Thank you to add Japanese definition, it will bust my Japanese. In my opinion, it's better to start at n3 to read definitions only in Japanese or it will harder later on higher levels.

this is not only a great way to study N3 vocab, it looks lovely too. A lot of care has gone into this and I intend to use it both to boost my reading comprehension and to help me acquire N3 vocab. Thanks mate.

please do the same for N2!

This is a great deck! I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the Japanese definitions I could understand, and it only gets easier as you go. You really feel like you have a much deeper understanding of the word than with the usual EDICT definitions. Ok I cheated and I did add the English definition so that I could check my understanding of the Japanese, but I tried not to use them too much.

It's not 100% perfect, there are a few cases where the definition is just a redirect ("see word X"), or where the examples don't really match the definition, or the two examples are almost the same, but these are relatively rare. There were also a few words which seemed pretty uncommon to me, but they share their kanji/pronunciation with a more common word. For example I don't know why I'm supposed to learn the word "eaves", and I think its kanji 軒 is more common as a counter for houses, but maybe I'm wrong. Another weird one was 畑地(はたち) which jisho doesn't even list as a common word, but it sounds like 二十歳... That's probably a problem with the source list, it's hard to find a good one on the web (saw this article on the topic: http://kanjibox.net/ios/blog/archives/2013/11/fixing-jlpt-lists/)

Anyway enough rambling, thanks for making this deck and pretty please do the same for N2!
