3,100 Traditional Chinese Characters (TBCL/TOCFL)
Description
This deck contains cards for the 3,100 Traditional Chinese characters defined by the Taiwan Benchmarks for the Chinese Language (TBCL), categorized into seven proficiency levels. The cards are primarily targeted at students studying Standard Chinese in Taiwan, specifically those preparing for the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL), which uses TBCL as a reference [1][2]. This deck is also useful for students taking Chinese classes in Taiwan who frequently have to endure multiple weekly dictation tests (聽寫). The main focus of this deck is on isolated character recognition and character production through writing.
Each character includes its simplified version, pronunciation(s) in Hanyu Pinyin with tone marks/diacritics and Zhuyin, monolingual Chinese definition(s), English definition(s), and a stroke order diagram.
The characters were sourced from the official TBCL website. Simplified versions, English definitions, and some pronunciations come from CC-CEDICT. Monolingual Chinese definitions and additional pronunciations come from 兩岸詞典 (LAC). The stroke order diagrams are provided by 筆順字典.
If you notice there are 33 extra notes in this deck, making a total of 3,133 characters instead of 3,100, it's because some entries in the TBCL list include common character variations, e.g. 台/臺, also referred to as 異體字. These main character and variation entries have been split into separate notes.
Notable Features
- Uses the official TW-Kai (全字庫楷體字型) font created by the Taiwanese government. This regular script (楷體) font displays traditional Chinese characters according to the standard used in Taiwan. Students in Taiwan will be familiar with this font as it is used in almost every Taiwanese textbook and official government document. Many traditional Chinese fonts do not follow the Taiwanese standard, showing characters with subtle differences, like a 最 with 日 on top, instead of 冃, or a 起 with 己, instead of 巳. Using this font ensures that students interested in learning traditional characters as used in Taiwan will learn the correct versions.
- Animated stroke order diagrams that adhere to the stroke order standard set by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education.
- Each character includes its Chinese definition(s), allowing advanced learners to use a monolingual approach to understand the character's meaning.
- Includes optional Zhuyin readings for each character, ideal for those who want to impress their Taiwanese Chinese teachers by reading Zhuyin fluently.
- Offers two card types: one for writing practice and one for character recognition, enabling practice of both input and output.
- Features a minimalistic card template and layout. While not designed by a professional designer, the template is functional and can be customized or replaced with a design of your choice.
- Supports dark mode.
