Description

This deck is perfect for those following the MIA/AJATT method, as it uses recognition cards only (Kanji in the front and keyword/meaning in the back, alongisde a useful mnemonic). This is a further edited, improved and enhanced version of (kudos to its original author, I just polished and worked upon his already laid groundwork): https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/627768060 I have added stories, corrected RTK numbers to match with the 6th edition of the book (and reorder about 150 cards to be in the correct order), and I have added stories WITH THE RADICALS included in the description. An example of what I mean: Kanji: 蒸 Keyword: steam Story:A jellyfish (氶) is 95% water (水), in other words, almost completely (了) made out of water (水). To prepare steamed jellyfish (氶), put it in a pot, turn the fire (灬) on and add some condiment flowers (艹). Once the jellyfish (氶) touches the floor (一) of the pot, it's ready. If you need a helping hand (丞), I'm an expert in preparing "steamed hams." Stroke count: 13 Heisig number: 2049 Yet another example Kanji: 属 Keyword: belong Story: "This territory now belongs to Yu the Great (禹)!" says the military general, sticking a flag (尸) on the ground. The flag (尸) shows the emblem of House Gnat (䖝), à-la-Game of Thrones. A farmer who lives close by pops up and says "I piss (尸) on Yu the Great (禹), he is nothing more than a gnat (䖝) with a belt (冂)! If he is so great why doesn't he come here personally? I refuse to belong to his domain, so by tomorrow I'll be long gone from here!" Stroke count: 12 Heisig number: 2103 Some high frequency Kanji from RTK 3 have been added as well (Not that many, just 38 more Kanji on top of the 2200 ones fro RTK I)

Very fun and well put together deck. The choice of meanings is generally well selected and it's been interesting to go from not being able to read Kanji at all to having some practical comprehension in very little time

This deck fixes my main issue with Heisig's stories. His method is correct, but, in my opinion, Heisig's stories do not properly implement his own method and even instill bad habits in the reader.

By being overly verbose and using obscure or outdated keywords, he adds a lot of superfluous detail to nearly every single story. This not only makes a story harder to recall, but also easy to mix it up with other stories and then recall the wrong keyword as a result. There is naturally going to be some crossover with words in stories when you make 2000 of them, which is why it's important to exercise brevity. This deck is much better at simple sentences which hit the important keywords and nothing extra.

Thank you!

I mainly used https://kanji.koohii.com as inspiration and went through a lot of the stories to see which one would fit it better, then I would add the radicals to the story (inside a parenthesis), and make sure each radical was italicized and each keyword bolded so as to make it easier to recognize.

Some of the kanji did not have good stories, so I just added my own, using the radicals at hand and the keyword
A lot of work went into this but it was the work of many people coming together (BritVsJapan was the original provider of the 4 kanji-per-card card format, and it was quite brilliant).

Amazing deck! Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for creating this!

You're welcome! If you want, there's an updated version with a few more Kanji added in. The link is:

You won't lose your progress by adding this version. It should just add a few cards to your current collection and you should be able to continue studying as usual!

The radicals in the stories are perfect 👌
Comment from author
Yeah, they were quite useful and no other deck has them, so I decided to incorporate them into mine and study with them. Far easier to study and visualize the Kanji that way.

Good deck!
However I'm kinda curious about why you changed words for some kanji, or why some are missing ? (Like 汎 for example)
Comment from author
If you go to https://kanji.koohii.com/, the community suggested changing some of the keywords, as they do not accurately reflect what the kanji actually represents. I also double checked every keyword with jisho.org for a more accurate keyword that truly encapsulated what the Kanji character meant.

The mnemonics that come with the Kanji's could be better. I have edited more than half of them as they can be quite incoherent.
Comment from author
The stories were a community effort taken from either:

https://kanji.koohii.com/

or

https://hochanh.github.io/rtk/

Please search there for improved stories if the ones I selected are not of your liking.

* WARNING*

This is a fine deck, but is based upon this other deck below by Matthew Hawkins that may be automatically updated and overwritten if you have already downloaded it previously. If you wish to keep the previous deck as-is, reconsider downloading this new deck. You may lose any edits you may have made.

deck based on:
MatthewHawkins.co | BritVSJapan's Super Simple RTK Deck
Comment from author
Thank you for pointing this out! Yes. I even rearranged it and modified the numbers since Matthew's deck was not based on the RTK I 6th edition of the book. I added those extra Kanji present on the 6th edition.

I agree. The guy who left a dislike is a fuckin moron. The problem with the limit of the new card is an Anki problem, not a deck problem.
BTW, after you finish RRTK I'd recommend you to work with Refold's JP1K deck. It will help you to learn lots of new vocabulary and Kanji readings.

The guy who's given the only thumbdown is an imbecile and his justification for it absolutely idiotic. Great, great deck. Thank you ever so much for sharing.

Thank you for you work!

I've been using this deck but noticed some cards (<1 per lesson) were not in the 6th ed order. The card numbers are ok but their introduction order in the deck seems to be moved past 2000 for all of them. I'm not sure if this was somehow on purpose or something I did. I fixed it by going to Browse, selecting "new" cards and using the Reposition command, described here https://docs.ankiweb.net/browsing.html?#cards
Comment from author
Going to "Browse" and then clicking on the "Sort Field" part of it should make all of the numbers line up correctly, then you can just Ctrl + A to select all of the cards and right click while being positioned at the very beginning (Card 1) and then click "Reposition". It should align every card with the 6th edition.

Very helpful, love the stories.
I know the keywords may not be 100% accurate but there is a good reason for it. That is that every kanji needs a different key to avoid confusion and when the kanji is added to your mental dictionary with that basic keyword, you can continue filling it with a subconscious understanding and how to pronounce it through immersion and in-context practice.
In other words, this is exactly what I've been looking for. Great job!

Appreciate the appreciation! :). Hope it helps in your studies!

Is this deck supposed to include mnemonics? I don't see them...
Comment from author
Yes, they're right there.

An example:

spy
Mr. T (亻) is a terrible spy. He walks around upright (貞). "Why should I hide?! I've got nothing to be ashamed of!"

Hope it helps!

How were you able to show the kanji in 4 different fonts?
Comment from author
I just took this deck as a base:

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/627768060

And built upon it by adding stories, components in the stories, highlighting the keyword in bold, and highlighting the components in italics. The 4 fonts that are showing were already in the deck that I mentioned.

Super helpful to include the components, especially if you're learning the Kanji with stories in a language other than English!
Comment from author
Yeah, the little components are what helped it stick for me a lot better.

Great deck, but a few questions if someone can answer:

- Where are the explanations from? Often they are much better than my version of Heisig (6th edition).

- Why does Anki sometimes skip cards? E.g. I add new cards manually when I study them instead of a fixed number per day. It did not add "Elbow" (card 46) and skipped straight from card 45 to 47. Is this related to some "similarity" option in the deck options?

- How can I make the stroke order show? Instead of a stroke order I just see one or four repeated versions of the respective Kanji.

Again, great deck and thanks!
Comment from author
I think the fourth font that shows the Kanji (the one in the lower right corner) shows the stroke orders (alas the numbers are kinda small).

Very good its RTK 6th edition all on anki, i would still recommend the book along side as it has the primitive meanings but an amazing deck
Comment from author
Yes, definitely recommended to use it at least until Kanji 500 to get the gist of the method. The primitives as they explain them on the book are key.

Sometimes I end up in unknown corners of internet with some really well crafted piece of art without no recognition - this deck is one these moments.
Comment from author
Thank you so much! There was no deck like it so I decided to work on it myself. It TRULY helps to have the radicals in parenthesis as part of the mnemonics, cause otherwise you wouldn't know what they're talking about anyways. I hope it helps you in your studies as much as it did in mine! :).
